The Book Behind the Story

My father wasn't just a Christian exorcist — he had been a Satanist before his own deliverance, and the ministry that followed was extraordinary by any measure: hundreds of deliverances, documented encounters, a documentary film. But this book isn't his story. It's mine. What it actually forms in a person to grow up that close to the unseen battle Paul describes in Ephesians 6:12. To watch things in your own living room that the rest of the world only encounters in Hollywood movies. To carry that story in silence for thirty years — and then finally say it out loud. I didn't inherit a theology. I inherited a front-row seat.

"Fanciful words, twisted theology, bizarre, extreme…perhaps these are your thoughts processing The Blue Lady. It’s easy to be dismissive of uncomfortable spiritual truth. Unknowingly we become unbelieving believers, rejecting Biblical spirituality. But in the process, we live beneath our inheritance, lacking power, authority, or intimacy with our Creator. Be a risk taker! Invite the Holy Spirit to guide you through this book. God says: My people perish for lack of knowledge…and on the topic the author covers, for me, this was so true."

"Such a riveting story! This is such an important topic that is rarely talked about. The author gives a first hand description of his experiences with spiritual warfare, and each chapter is more unreal than the one before. Really appreciate the author sharing his life story, and I hope others are encouraged and helped by him sharing these events."

"This book is more than a personal story—it’s a divine message to the world. It’s a warning and a call: spiritual warfare is real, and the only protection we have is in God. We must put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), stay alert, and never forget that the victory is already won through Christ."

"I read your book the very day I received it - the entire thing - and was moved beyond words. I underlined and analyzed and was fearful and tearful...You cautiously yet boldly testified of the Hollywood-hype exorcisms (possession) and the depressed and deceived victims (oppression) and explained how the enemy operates in both. It was sensational but not sensationalized. Theologically sound yet written for the layman. Haunting and daunting yet informative and encouraging. And you gave God the glory each step of the way. Well done."

Rick Hansen.
Author.

Rick Hansen spent two decades as a senior executive driving growth at Apple, Accenture, and DXC before he finally told the story he'd been carrying since childhood. He is a TEDx speaker, a leadership coach, and the author of two books — Leadership and the Art of Surfing and The Blue Lady. He speaks to corporate audiences about discernment as a leadership skill, and to churches and faith communities about the spiritual reality behind Ephesians 6:12 — not as a commentator or theologian, but as someone who grew up inside it.

Meet Rick

I learned the most important leadership skill I teach in the most unusual classroom imaginable — my own living room, watching my father perform deliverance ministry hundreds of times across my entire childhood. He was a Christian exorcist. I grew up in the middle of his ministry, from my earliest memories to today, witnessing things most people only encounter in books and Hollywood movies.

What that formed in me — long before I understood it — was a trained ability to sense what's real beneath the surface of a room before it becomes visible. I call it discernment. It's the same skill that carried me through two decades of senior leadership at Apple, Accenture, and DXC, a TEDx talk on what surfing taught me about leadership, and every keynote and workshop I now deliver to leaders and communities around the world.

I spent thirty years not telling this story publicly. Then my daughters asked me why. That conversation — and the one that followed on Poplitics with Alex Clark — is what finally prompted me to write The Blue Lady.

I live in Austin, Texas, with my wife and three daughters. When I'm not on a stage or working with leaders, you'll find me in the water.

Practical Guide and Approach for Winning Spiritual Battles

Why Did I write this book?

The devil’s greatest trick is to make people believe that he doesn’t exist.

—Keyser Söze, The Usual Suspects

I knew for years I needed to tell this story. What stopped me wasn't shame, and it wasn't doubt. It was the reasonable assumption that saying it out loud — that my father was a Christian exorcist, that I grew up watching hundreds of deliverances in our living room, that the unseen battle of Ephesians 6:12 was the furniture of my childhood — would make me sound like the most fringe person in whatever room I was standing in.

Then I started paying attention to what was already out loud in the culture. A sitting Vice President naming demons on the country's biggest podcast. Catholic exorcist training up 650% since 2020. Netflix's most-watched film in its history built entirely around a hidden spiritual war. The world's most famous atheist calling himself a cultural Christian. A Stanford anthropologist finding that the experience of sensing an unseen, intelligent presence is a human constant across every culture she's studied.

I didn't create this moment. I just finally said out loud what I'd known since I was a kid — right as the rest of the world started saying it too.

When I finally shared these experiences with my family, my daughters said: "Dad, you have to tell this story." That conversation, and the one that followed on Poplitics with Alex Clark, is what started The Blue Lady.
